Microgreens and hair health: what the evidence says

What the dermatological literature actually establishes about micronutrients and hair loss — and why no study has tested microgreens as a hair intervention.

No study has tested microgreens for hair. What is measurable is their nutrient content: a 2012 assay of 25 commercial microgreens found total ascorbic acid from 20.4 to 147.0 mg per 100 g fresh weight, alongside tocopherols (vitamin E), and we have set out separately how those figures compare with the mature vegetables. What the hair research examines is micronutrient status in general — vitamins A, B, C, D and E, and iron, selenium and zinc — and it is considerably more cautious than most articles on the subject suggest. This page sets out what that literature establishes and what it does not.

What we corrected in this article. Every claim on this page used to rest on a single commercial microgreens blog, including statements that beet microgreens “prevent hair loss” and that vitamin E “improves blood circulation in the scalp”. We have replaced that source with the dermatological literature on micronutrients and hair loss, and removed the per-variety claims, which no measurement supports. No study has tested microgreens as an intervention for hair.

What the evidence actually shows

There is a genuine research literature connecting micronutrient status to non-scarring hair loss. Almohanna, Ahmed, Tsatalis and Tosti (2019) reviewed it for vitamins A, B, C, D and E and for iron, selenium and zinc. Their conclusion is worth quoting in substance rather than paraphrasing loosely: micronutrients play an important but not entirely clear role in normal hair follicle development, deficiency “may represent a modifiable risk factor”, and large double-blind placebo-controlled trials are still required to determine whether supplementation helps.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis by Ahmed and colleagues, pooling 29 studies on telogen effluvium, found significantly lower serum ferritin and vitamin D in people with the condition than in healthy controls. Two things about that result matter here. It is an association measured in people who already have hair loss, not evidence that raising those levels regrows hair. And the two micronutrients it identifies are the two a tray of microgreens is least able to help with: ferritin reflects iron stores, and plants are not a source of vitamin D at all.

The honest summary is therefore: if you are deficient in a relevant micronutrient, correcting that deficiency is worth discussing with a doctor, and diet is part of how you do it. If you are not deficient, there is no good evidence that eating more of any particular vegetable changes your hair.

Where microgreens fit

Microgreens are a nutrient-dense vegetable, and that is measurable. Xiao, Lester, Luo and Wang (2012) assayed 25 commercial microgreens and found total ascorbic acid from 20.4 to 147.0 mg per 100 g fresh weight, alongside carotenoids, phylloquinone and tocopherols — vitamin E among them — and reported higher nutritional densities in the cotyledon leaves than in the mature leaves listed in the USDA database.

So microgreens are a reasonable way to eat more vitamin C and vitamin E. Whether adding them to a diet changes anyone’s measured micronutrient status — let alone their hair — has not been tested. What we are not going to tell you is that a particular variety is a hair treatment. We previously singled out beet, radish and sunflower microgreens for hair; we could find no measurement comparing microgreen varieties for any hair-related outcome, so we have removed that section rather than keep a ranking we cannot support. If you would like to use them on your hair anyway, we have written up two hair-mask recipes — pleasant and cheap to make, but worth treating as a cosmetic you enjoy rather than as a way of feeding the hair follicle, which is not an effect anyone has measured.

Hair loss has many causes — genetic, hormonal, autoimmune, thyroid, medication-related, and yes, nutritional. Distinguishing between them requires a clinician, and a nutritional cause is diagnosed with a blood test, not guessed at from a diet. This article is general information, not medical advice.
